REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION REFERENDUM
The Georgia State Legislature passed the Transportation Investment Act of 2010 , also known as TIA or TSPLOST in 2010. This act authorized a vote for a new 1-cent sales tax for the Metro Atlanta region, to design and construct transportation projects. The state was split into 12 regions, and each region is to have a separate referendum for a transportation sales tax.
The estimated amount of tax generated over the life of the Act for the Atlanta Region is about $7.22 billion. The tax will sunset after 10 years or when the total amount has been collected. All funds raised in the Atlanta region will stay in the region and be used to implement transportation projects. A 21-member Regional Roundtable, comprised of Mayors and County Commissioners, approved a $6.14 billion “Regional Project” list. "Local Projects" account for the other 15% of the $7.22 billion. Now the decision rests with the voters of Metro Atlanta. On July 31, 2012, they will decide whether to approve or disapprove a penny regional sales tax to support transportation.
The Regional Referendum and City of Douglasville
